Aastra Telecom announces North America’s Most Advanced Standards Based SIP-DECT Wireless Communications Solution

DECT Mobility solution offers customers interference free and secure high quality voice communications over a proven and powerful wireless technology platform

CONCORD, ON, CANADA and SAN JOSE, CA (VON Conference, booth #217), — March 20, 2007 — Aastra Telecom, a global provider of open-standard communication products, systems and solutions, today announced that it is launching the industry’s most advanced SIP based enterprise-grade DECT wireless solution for the North American market. Already a major player in wireless communications in the European Enterprise Communication marketplace, Aastra now brings its knowledge and expertise in Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) to North America.

Leveraging existing R&D capabilities in DECT technologies, Aastra has developed a highly scaleable and flexible SIP-DECT solution that is well suited for high-quality wireless voice applications. Small and medium sized businesses, enterprises with multiple locations, or large campus environments with several buildings can easily deploy an on-site wireless voice network creating a mobile workforce that can stay in touch no matter where they go and eliminate expensive recurring fees. Whether it is within the same building, or in another location that is on the same corporate network, the Aastra SIP-DECTTM solution provides users with secure and reliable high quality voice access anywhere across the network with full roaming and seamless hand-over support.

“The addition of SIP-DECT to our product line further enhances Aastra’s industry leading portfolio offering of open standard SIP-based telephones” said Yves Laliberte, Executive Vice President at Aastra. ”As the migration to VoIP continues to gain momentum, the need for quality mobility solutions that are complementary and flexible will accelerate. We have positioned ourselves to become a single source provider for our customers with both desktop and wireless SIP telephony solutions making deployment and ongoing management of the endpoint even more cost-effective and efficient”.

The Aastra SIP-DECTTM solution is comprised of DECT Handsets and IP DECT Access Points that are managed by OpenMobility Manager (OMM) software and provisioned on a SIP based infrastructure as simple SIP extensions. The OMM administrates all handset and mobility activities (roaming, seamless handover and media stream) and can be installed on the IP DECT access point, on a PBX, or on a Linux-Server. The system utilizes the 1920 – 1930 MHz unlicensed PCS (UPCS) spectrum that has been recently approved for use in North America by the FCC providing exceptional RF coverage per access point.

Aastra’s SIP-DECT solution can easily be deployed in most open-standard IP environments including; Hosted or Premised based using a SIP based IP-PBX, Hybrid PBX or Open Source PBXs. Furthermore, by leveraging existing SIP-based infrastructures and IP networks, IT managers can easily implement a cost-effective converged wireless solution that is scaleable and future proofs any upfront investment as the system supports up to 256 access points.

“Aastra has enjoyed a leadership position in DECT wireless communications in Europe for some time now” said Simon Beebe, Vice President of Product Management at Aastra. “Based on the feedback we are receiving from trials currently underway here in North America, our customers are extremely excited about this innovative adaptation of the DECT technology and appreciate the value of the solution over other wireless alternatives”.

The Aastra SIP-DECTTM solution is targeted for introduction on June 1st and will be available through a select group of Aastra’s authorized distributors throughout North America. List pricing for a complete solution, including handsets and access points, will be in the $500 to $800 US range per user depending on the type of deployment configuration.
