Why doesn’t the message waiting light work?

Why do I hear static on the line?
The static could be caused by either the (curly) spiral cord or the receiver itself. What to try: Check to see if the static is on the speaker as well as the receiver. If the static is only in the receiver, then what you would have to do is take the spiral cord and receiver from another phone and test it on the 390. If the static disappears, then try the original receiver with the replacement spiral cord, if the static is still gone then the spiral cord needs to be replaced, if the static appears again, then the receiver needs to be replaced.
